Scanning Overview

3D Scanning is the process of taking real world objects and generating 3 dimensional models from them, within a computer environment.

“if a picture’s worth a 1,000 words then a 3D scan is worth 1,000,000 (1000 ^2) words!”

Stages of Data

3D Point Cloud

• Generated by time of flight, phase shift, laser line triangulation, white light pattern projection triangulation
• Just X,Y and Z coordinates.
• Usually recorded in the millions
• Usually recorded at a rate of 10,000 pts / secon

 3D Polygon Mesh

• Generated by joining all the points together.  3 neighbouring points form a triangle!
• Missing data can be filled in software to generate a “watertight” mesh – Needed for 3D printing, animation or analysis software.

 3D Cad Model

• Poly Mesh is used to generate solid or surface models for use in animation or manufacturing software
