Australian Air Force RAAF reduces time on ground with digital shape sampling and processing (DSSP)
The RAAF contacted Wysiwyg 3D Pty Ltd to help streamline the repair process. Wysiwyg’s solution included a Platinum seven-axis FARO (www.faro.com) arm and scanner, and Geomagic Studio and Geomagic Qualify (www.geomagic.com) digital shape sampling and processing (DSSP) software.
“The RAAF needed a solution that was both portable and highly accurate,” says Shane Rolton, managing director of Wysiwyg 3D Pty Ltd. “These tools provide the RAAF with great flexibility to support whatever job it needs to do in-house or in the field.”
“We’ve had great success with the new process,” says Rolton. “Eventually the RAAF machinists want to scan the aircraft itself, eliminating the need for the dental putty mold and increasing the on-location capabilities.”
Seabird Plane
The generation of “As - Built” 3D cad model and drawings can be a painful process, especially for an aircraft that has very few straight lines, such as the Seabird.
It didn't take long to realise that laser scanning the entire airframe would be a fantastic benefit to the design office.
Used for the generation of shop drawings, corrective action in manufacturing, livery design, and future design improvements.
